Frequently asked questions
What does HEMA-free mean and why does it matter?
HEMA (2-hydroxyethyl methacrylate) is a monomer found in many gel nail products that can cause allergic reactions in some clients. A HEMA-free formula replaces HEMA with alternative monomers that deliver the same gel performance — adhesion, shine, and wear — without exposing sensitive clients to the most common allergen in professional nail products.
Who should use HEMA-free gel products?
GLOSS HEMA-free products are recommended for clients who have experienced redness, itching, swelling, or skin reactions from gel manicures; clients with a known HEMA sensitivity or allergy; and clients with generally sensitive skin who want to reduce their exposure to common allergens. Always do a patch test if you are unsure.
Does the HEMA-free formula perform the same as standard GLOSS Rubber Base?
Yes. GLOSS HEMA-free Base and Top are formulated to meet the same professional standards as the standard GLOSS line — strong adhesion, long wear, and high gloss. The performance difference for most clients is negligible.
Do I need to use both the HEMA-free base AND the HEMA-free top coat?
For a fully HEMA-free service, yes. Using only one HEMA-free product while applying a standard product for the other step may still expose sensitive clients to HEMA. For complete protection, use the HEMA-free base and HEMA-free top coat together.
Can I use GLOSS HEMA-free base with regular GLOSS gel polish?
For truly allergy-safe manicures, every layer should be HEMA-free. However, if a client is sensitive primarily to the base coat contact, switching the base may help. Consult with your client and proceed cautiously for first-time use. See our full HEMA-free collection.
How long does a HEMA-free gel manicure last?
With proper nail prep and application, GLOSS HEMA-free Base and Top deliver 3–4 weeks of wear — the same as the standard GLOSS system.
